Chicago: Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor & Co. 1868. xii, 236p, illustrated. 22cm. Revised edition. Black leather back and green cloth over boards, titling in gilt on the spine; marbled edges. Wear at head of spine, minor wear at edges of spine, unobtrusive stain on front cover, corners lightly bumped. Isaac Sprague (1811ñ1895) was born in Hingham, Massachusetts, and apprenticed with his uncle as a carriage painter. He was a self-taught landscape, botanical and ornithological painter. Sprague served as one of the assistants to John James Audubon on an ornithological expedition up the Missouri River (1843), taking measurements and making sketches. His diary of this expedition is in the Boston Athenaeum. He met Asa Gray in 1844 and illustrated several of his works as well as the works of others over a long career. His work has been exhibited at the Houghton Library and Hunt Institute. Emanuel D. Rudolphís "Isaac Sprague, ëDelineator and Naturalistí" in the Journal of the History of Biology (1990, vol. 23, no. 1, pp. 91ñ126) contains a bibliography of works illustrated by Sprague. In very good condition.
