Finney was born born in Natchez, Mississippi in 1863 and moved to Bel Air with his family in 1871. He entered Harvard Medical School in 1884 and by 1889 was working in the Johns Hopkins Hospitals' Dispensary. He later became the first president of the American College of Surgeons.
