New York: Published by G. F. Cooledge & Brother, Proprietors of the Copyright of Webster's Elementary Spelling Book. 1843? Frontispiece, [5], 6-168p, 1 p. ad. 17.5cm. Brown cloth back and blue paperboards; titling in black on the front cover. Corners chipped, rounded; cover paper chipped, stained; damp stain from the head of the spine penetrating the text; bottom margin of first page torn away; prior owner's signature at the top of the first page. A fair copy. "American Best Sellers. The first American best seller was Noah Webster's "The Elementary Spelling Book," known as The Blue-Backed Speller, printed in 1783, and used as late as 1900, it sold a million copies a year as early as 1855." [From a 1936 newspaper clipping laid in the book]. The caption at the top of the frontispiece reads: "This spelling Book is almost universally used throughout the United States, the sale being nearly one million copies per annum!!!"
