A fair copy. "American Best Sellers. The first American best seller was Noah Webster's "The Elementary Spelling Book," known as The Blue-Backed Speller, printed in 1783, and used as late as 1900, it sold a million copies a year as early as 1855." [From a 1936 newspaper clipping laid in the book]. The caption at the top of the frontispiece reads: "This spelling Book is almost universally used throughout the United States, the sale being nearly one million copies per annum!!!"
