New York: Van Nostrand, 1867. 62p, 2 fold out plates. 19cm. Second edition. Black cloth over boards, titling in gilt on the front covers. This copy belonged to Charles R. Roelker who was an engineer on the NIPSIC, a steam gunboat, during the Civil War. Later as a Commander in the United States Navy, Roelker participated in the trials of the Holland VI submarine (1898), the precursor to modern submarines. Corners rubbed and skinned; spine ends missing; library pocket on bottom board paste down [no library stamps]; prior owner's stamp on the preface; paper has toned; corner piece of one plate missing with slight loss, crease tear. Just over three pages of notes on steam boilers with an illustration and formulas are laid-in. In good condition.
