The City Planned. Reprinted from the Westminster Gazette, 27 October 1910

A long letter written by Cobden-Sanderson on city planning and reprinted at the Doves Press as a free gift to subscribers. Cobden-Sanderson writes about the 1910 International Town Planning Conference, held in London from October 10th to the 15th. " "Mean streets make mean citizens and mean citizens mean streets." Perhaps these two sentences contain the moral of the speeches and papers on the moral aspect of the question. But neither the "making" of citizens nor the making of "streets" is, or should be, in the planning of cities, the main inspiration or ambition of a city planned, important as they are on the way towards and as a means to an end still nobler, if more remote." [Tidcombe: DPL1].

Report on a Plan for San Francisco. Daniel Burnham.
Report on a Plan for San Francisco.
By Daniel H. Burnham assisted by Edward H. Bennett. Presented to the Mayor and Board of Directors by the Association for the Improvement and Adornment of San Francisco. Edited by Edward O'Day. September MCMV. Published by the City. 211p, [numerous fold-outs, illustrations, folded plans], [8p. index]. Bound in burgundy cloth; titling in gilt on the front cover and spine. Stain to the foot of the spine, bottom edge of the covers penetrating the bottom cover to the first few endpapers. Three tears to the large maps. Burnham was invited to develop a comprehensive plan for San Francisco and began work in September of 1904. The Plan was presented to the city in September of 1905 and printed copies, estimated at 3,000, were ready for distribution to the public by April of 1906. Accounts indicate that the copies were delivered to city hall on April 17th and the earthquake struck on April 18th. The ensuing fire destroyed city hall and the stock of reports. It is not known how many copies survived, and although copies do exist in the San Francisco Public Library and other institutions, there is no census as to the number of surviving copies. Copies that do become available are usually from institutional special collections and are thus ex-library. In very good condition.
