A fair copy of a scarce book.

Bound in green cloth over beveled boards, titling and decoration in gilt on black, blue, red and white leather onlays, surrounded by a decorative border stamped in black; in blind on the bottom cover; all edges gilt. Chromolithograph title page, dedicatory page and six plates. Elegant title and dedicatory pages with capitals in gilt, and letters in color on the dedicatory page. The concluding illumination is perhaps the most beautiful in the set. It depicts floral vines, bushes, mice, birds, and a rooster, all in color on a gilt border surrounding the text in red, blue and gilt. All the illuminations are spectacular with gilt and colorful floral decorations. Professionally re-backed and bound with the original cloth laid down. This is a well loved copy of stunning Victorian chromolithography in very good condition.

Corners lightly bumped, head of spine chipped, from an historical society's collection with penciled notation in the top edge corner of the front free endpaper; the jacket has two pieces chipped from the top edge of the front panel and from the corners, slightly soiled, treated by a professional conservator who reinforced the edges and corners, and touched-up a small piece of titling on the front panel. A very good, bright copy in a good, rare jacket.

In very good condition. The cover title of this book is "Mamma's Picture Book." The title page, "Mamma's Picture Book for Her Dear Children" is bound with a frontispiece before the collection of fables. One copy of this book can be found at the American Antiquarian Society's library, but their record starts with "Stories of Hunters and Hunting," which is the first story in the book and corresponds to this book suggesting the title page and frontis in both copies are misbound.
