Quarter bound in leather with leather tips and marbled paper boards; title in gilt on the spine. One corner skinned, endpapers foxed; the paper is crisp although there is some browning. In very good condition. The lame duck Second Session of the 36th Congress ran from the third of December, 1861 to the second of March and was followed on the fourth by the Special Session of the Senate which ended on the twenty-eighth of March. Highlights of this volume include Buchanan's last message to Congress and Lincoln's inaugural address. Of significance the Morrill Tariff resolution and the many speeches contained in the "State of the Union" section of the Appendix reflecting the turmoil surrounding the "select committee of thirty-three" and secession.

Edges of volume one rubbed, covers slightly rubbed, corners bumped, skinned; slightly foxed frontispiece, with offset on title page; volume two: front cover joint torn starting at the headcap for about two inches, edges and covers rubbed, more so than volume one, spine slightly faded, corners bumped, skinned, second flyleaf folded at fore edge, frontispiece slightly foxed, tissue guard too, offset on second flyleaf and title page, several pages with pieces of bottom edge, and corners torn away, but with no impact. Still, in better than good condition.

Re-backed in sympathetic brown cloth with the original backstrip laid down; second neat signature on half-title page; wear to the corners; non detracting staining to the covers. An important association copy in very good condition.
